Replace the O2 Sensor in a 2000 Toyota Echo

The oxygen sensor (or O2 sensor) in your 2000 Toyota Echo measures fuel and oxygen ratios. Over time, the O2 sensor can become dirty and clogged. A bad O2 sensor can cause the engine light to come on and your Echo to stall. Your Echo is equipped with two sensors; most parts houses can run a free diagnostic test for you to find out which sensor needs to be changed. They also will be able to tell you which of the two O2 filters (front or rear) need to be replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Jack up the front end of the Echo and position the jack stands into place.

    • 2

Locate the O2 sensor that needs to be replaced. Both O2 sensors are located on top of the exhaust pipe, on either side of the catalytic converter.

    • 3

Remove the two mounting bolts that secure the O2 sensor with the socket set.

    • 4

Push in the two plastic clamps holding the O2 sensor's connectors together. Push in the clamps with a flat-head screwdriver if you cannot pry them inward with your fingers.

    • 5

Plug in the connector of the new O2 sensor.

    • 6

Mount the O2 sensor back on the exhaust pipe and replace the mounting bolts. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
