How to Remove a Front Wheel Road Glide

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide was introduced by the "Motor Company" as a flagship model among its touring line of motorcycles. Its frame-mounted fairing and V-twin engine allowed it to cut through the wind at high speeds on the freeway. Add to that cool, custom graphics and most enthusiasts simply went ape over the massive bike. Performing routine maintenance, however, was soon discovered to be a bit more detailed on the Road Glide than on the average Harley ride. Luckily, though, removal of the front wheel is a straight-forward task when performed correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Motorcycle lift
  • Hex wrench set
  • Large screwdriver or metal rod
  • SAE socket set
  • SAE open-ended wrench set
  • Rubber mallet
  • Turn off the motorcycle's ignition. Block the bike so that the front wheel is elevated off of the ground.

  • Remove the two bolts securing the left disk brake caliper with a large hex wrench. Lift the caliper off of the rotor and allow it to hang loose by its brake line. Repeat the procedure for the right side disk brake caliper.

  • Insert a large screwdriver or metal rod through the hole in the front wheel axle on the right side of the bike. Hold the rod steady, preventing the axle from turning. Remove the axle nut on the left side of the wheel with an SAE socket wrench.

  • Loosen but do not remove the two slider cap nuts on the right side of the axle with an SAE open-ended wrench.

  • Tap out the axle with a rubber mallet. Drop the wheel from within the front forks and remove it to a work bench or other safe area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not squeeze the brake lever while the calipers are removed from the brake disks.
  • Use caution to avoid scratching the front fender.
