Main Fuse Removal for a Miata

Removing the main fuse on a Miata is a skill every owner should learn before they have to do it under roadside conditions. While the procedure is straightforward, it is not one to be figured out during the stress of a break down. Just a few basic mechanical tools are needed that are inexpensive enough to be kept in the trunk at all times. The average weekend mechanic can replace the fuse in about 30 minutes..

Things You'll Need

  • Safety glasses
  • LED-type flashlight
  • Metric socket kit
  • Screwdriver kit
  • Open the Miata trunk by pulling the marked handle in the console between the seats.

Put on the safety glasses. Remove the soft cover from the battery. Keep the flashlight handy because the trunk light and hood light will not work when the battery is disconnected.

  • Remove the negative cable from the battery, using the metric socket kit. Remove the positive cable in the same manner. Set the cables aside.

  • Pull the hood release located in the driver's side of the Miata under the dash marked with a hood logo. Open the hood. Look on the passenger side under the hood area near the inner fender and fire wall and find the fuse panel box.

  • Remove the outer cover from the fuse box by snapping it off. Using the metric socket kit, remove the screws or bolts on each end of the inner cover, which only partially covers some of the fuses. Lift the inner cover off and set it aside.

  • Look at the fuses and find the ones that are double the size of the others. Find the main fuse, which is the only one that has a bolt holding it down. Remove the bolt, using the metric socket kit, and remove the fuse by unplugging it with your fingers.
