How to Make a Bird Beak for a Vulture Costume

How to Make a Bird Beak for a Vulture Costume thumbnail
The vulture is the scariest of birds.

Of all the large predatory birds, the vulture is most likely to dredge up feelings of dread and apprehension. Looking like a feathered vampire sitting on its perch or circling the dying hero in a desolate dessert, it is the prime Halloween bird. But it is mostly that sharp, meat ripping beak that gives the vulture much of its creepy appearance, so a vulture costume must pay special attention to this aspect of the outfit.

Things You'll Need

  • Photo of vulture
  • 6-inch square piece of thick poster board
  • Several sheets of crape paper
  • Craft paint
  • Two paintbrushes
  • White glue
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Plain white half-face plastic mask

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the cardboard into a 5-inch long narrow triangle. Use a photo as a guide to get the right shape.

    • 2

Fold the triangle lengthwise in half and trim the base to fit around the nose of mask. Make sure the base does not obscure the eyes or mouth when placed over the mask.

    • 3

Tear crepe paper into small strips about 1/2 inch wide and a couple of inches long.

    • 4

Brush the strips with white glue and layer onto the cardboard. Use the bits of paper to form such features as the nostrils and overhanging tip. Let dry.

    • 5

Hot glue the beak to the mask.

    • 6

Cover the seam between the mask and beak with more paper strips.

    • 7

Paint the mask and beak, using the picture as a guide. Let dry.
