Lamp Repair: How to Thread Wire Through Lamp Pieces

Dale Yalanovsky

Threading wire through lamp pieces may sound intimidating, but getting the wire up to the socket or down to the plug is not as difficult as it may appear. Granted, there is some skill involved with this, and wire has been known to bend in different ways and shapes, but in general, anyone will be able to accomplish this task once they understand the procedures involved.

  1. Use your wire strippers or a sharp knife to strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the wires.

  2. Twist the stripped wires together making a point, much like an arrowhead.

  3. Drop a piece of lightweight string through the lamp pieces, and allow gravity to pull it down and through the lamp.

  4. Attach the string to the stripped wires by using a piece of electrical tape. Wrap the wires firmly and smooth out the tap as best as you can.

  5. Gently pull the string up through the lamp pieces until it pulls out of the opening.

  6. Remove the tape and the string, and the cord is ready to be connected to either a plug or a socket.
