How to Tie Dye an Under Armour Shirt

Save

Transform a plain Under Armour shirt to a stylish one you can wear out to the club, with a small investment of money and time. With a range of pattern styles and colors available, tie dye allows you to create a shirt that reflects your style and taste. Personalize the design as you experiment with different color combinations for your shirt. Create multiple color designs overlapping each other or use one central dye color to make a pattern that suits your personality.

Things You'll Need

  • Two large garbage bags
  • One newspaper section
  • Two pails, 5 gallons each
  • Large pot
  • Dye
  • Rubber bands
  • Rubber gloves
  • Paint stick
  • Prepare your table with plastic bags draped over the sides. Set two pails on the table filled with 2 to 6 gallons of heated water.

  • Pour one packet of dye into each pail. Include at least 2 gallons of water and no more 3 three gallons of water for each packet of dye. Add less water for a more concentrated color or more water for a lighter effect.

  • Pull a section of your shirt together and wrap one rubber band tightly around it. Create several designs by gathering multiple sections together with rubber bands with 1/2 inch intervals between each band.

  • Place the shirt into the pail containing the lightest dye. Leave it in the dye for about 7 minutes. Stir the dye occasionally with a paint stick.

  • Wear the rubber gloves and remove the shirt from the dye. Rinse it under cool water until no more color comes out. Put it into the next-lightest pail for 4 to 7 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clear.

  • Cut the elastic bands. Rinse the clothing in warm water until the dye no longer runs. Machine wash the shirt according to the directions on the label. Tumble or line dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow the manufacturer's directions on the dye; this article uses Ritz dye as an example
  • Run the rinse cycle until all the "loose" dye has been removed from the fabric.
  • Pretreat the fabric as directed in the manufacturer's directions.
