How to Transfer Notes From a Kindle to a PC

The Kindle allows you to add notes, also called annotations, to anything you read on the device. Whenever you save a note in your reading material, the Kindle stores it -- along with any highlights, bookmarks or clippings you create -- in a file named "My Clippings." Transfer this file to your PC and use a word processing program to quickly access all the notes you've made on your Kindle.

Things You'll Need

  • Kindle USB cord
  • Connect the Kindle to your PC using the USB cord that came with the reading device.

  • Click on "Open folder to view files" when the AutoPlay window appears on your computer screen. If the AutoPlay window does not appear, click the Windows Start button and choose "Computer." Your Kindle will be listed in the "Devices with Removable Storage" section of the Computer window. Double-click the Kindle icon.

  • Open the folder named "Documents."

  • Find "My Clippings.txt" in the list of folder contents.

  • Drag and drop (or copy and paste) the My Clippings.txt file to your computer's Desktop or a folder of your choice.

Tips & Warnings

  • The My Clippings document contains all of your notes, highlights, bookmarks and clippings. Each entry includes the name of the book and the date it was created, making your search for a specific note a simple task.
