Barcodes contain data intended to facilitate the tracking and inventory of items or products. They are created by barcode-generating software, printed and then scanned using a barcode scanner. The barcode scanner functions as a data-entry device that can instantly read and upload information contained by a barcode into software programs such as Microsoft Excel. Things You'll Need

  • Y-key dual-keyboard adapter
  • Barcode scanner
  • Turn off power to your computer. Plug your barcode scanner into its matching port at the back of your computer. Use a Y-key dual-keyboard adapter in case you have a keyboard-type of plug at the end of the scanner cable. The adapter will allow you to plug the keyboard and the scanner into the same port.

  • Turn on your computer and open Microsoft Excel. Go to the worksheet where you need to enter the information, point your cursor at the field or space where the data should be entered, and click on it to place the cursor on the field. When uploading barcode data into programs, data will be entered into the field or space where the cursor is positioned.

  • Hold the barcode scanner about 6 inches away from the barcode, aim the light toward the barcode, and press the push button switch to activate the scan. Pressing the button will instantly cause the scanner to read the barcode data and enter the data into the field in your worksheet where the cursor is positioned. Check the worksheet to see the data entered.
