How to Remove the Battery From an Inspiron Mini

Save

Dell's Inspiron Mini 1012 and 1018, both netbook computers, have 10-inch screens, weigh about 3 pounds and can last for hours away from a power outlet. If you own an Inspiron Mini, one of the easiest ways you can increase the amount of usage time away from a power outlet is to purchase a spare battery; when the old battery runs out, simply remove it and insert the spare.

  • Shut the Inspiron Mini down completely. If the power is already off, check the power light to confirm that it is not blinking. If the power light blinks, the computer is on standby. Turn it on and off again.

  • Close the screen of the Inspiron Mini, and turn the computer over so that the bottom faces up and the battery faces you.

  • Push the two plastic latches on the sides of the Inspiron Mini battery toward the outside of the computer. One of the latches locks into position, while you must hold the other in place while you remove the battery.

  • Place your finger into the opening of the seam between the battery and the bottom of the Inspiron Mini. Lift the edge of the battery up and rotate it toward you to remove it from the computer.

  • Place the new battery into the empty compartment. Push the locked release switch back into its original position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Power your Inspiron Mini down completely before removing the battery. Unless the computer is connected to a power outlet, removing the battery will cause the computer to lose all unsaved data -- and may cause hard drive corruption -- if the Inspiron Mini is turned on or in standby mode.
