AstroTurf is the registered name of a synthetic turf product developed in 1964. Originally designed for use on sports fields in place of grass, AstroTurf was installed in the Houston Astrodome in 1966. In addition to sports applications, versatile AstroTurf has a variety of commercial and residential uses such as a cover for patio or lawn areas, or doormats. Although AstroTurf resists mildew, mold may grow on dirt or other organic matter on the turf. You can effectively remove mold on AstroTurf with a simple bleach solution. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Chlorine bleach
  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Rubber gloves
  • Goggles
  • Spray bottle (optional)
  • Brush
  • Garden hose (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

      Place the AstroTurf in a well-ventilated area where you can also rinse it with a garden hose, if possible.

      Shake or vacuum dirt and debris from the AstroTurf.

      Put on rubber gloves and safety goggles.

    • 4

      Add 3/4 cup bleach per gallon of water in a bucket. Pour the bleach mixture into a spray bottle, if desired.

      Spray or pour the bleach mixture onto the mold. Cover the affected area completely. Let the bleach solution sit on the AstroTurf at least five minutes.

    • 6

      Scrub the area affected by mold with a brush.

    • 7

      Rinse the AstroTurf thoroughly, and let dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • The bleach solution will spatter when you're scrubbing AstroTurf with a brush; always protect your eyes and skin.
