How to Replace the Starter on a Focus

One of the good points of replacing the starter on the Ford Focus is the fact that you do not have to crawl under the car to remove it. Someone with no auto-repair experience can complete the project in an hour and a half to two hours. This not only saves you the trouble of getting the car to a garage to replace it, but it saves you a great deal of money on labor charges.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the engine compartment and disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the nut on the terminal.

      Remove the air cleaner assembly from the car by unclipping the cover and pulling it off. Disconnect the hose clamps using the screwdriver and pulling the hose away from the throttle body of the car.

      Tag the electrical connections to the starter using the marker and masking tape. Disconnect the wires using a wrench to remove the nuts and then unplug the wiring harness from the solenoid.

      Remove the mounting bolts from the starter using a socket and ratchet. Pull the starter away from the engine.

      Put the new starter into place on the engine and tighten the bolts using the socket and ratchet. Reconnect the electrical wires according to the tags you made for them. Tighten the nuts with a wrench and then plug the wiring harness back into the solenoid.

      Reattach the air cleaner assembly to the car and tighten the hose clamps with the screwdriver. Place the cover back on the air cleaner and clip it into place.

      Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the nut with a wrench. Start the car to test the installation of the new starter.
