How to Change the Transmission Fluid in a 1997 Saab 900S
Changing the transmission fluid on the 1997 Saab 900S is a bit more complicated than with most cars because it holds 8.5 quarts of transmission fluid, but only 3.5 quarts can be changed at a time. This is because half is held in the front drain pan and the rest is located in the torque converter. Changing the transmission fluid requires you to essentially change the fluid twice, which results in a mix of new and old fluid, with most being new fluid.

1
Make sure the engine is cold. Slide underneath the car with a 3/8-inch ratchet. Locate the transmission drain pan, which is a large metal box surrounded by bolts. Next to the large box is a screw-pin bolt. That's the drain bolt for the transmission fluid. Place a pan underneath the drain bolt.

2
Remove the drain bolt with the ratchet. Wait for the transmission fluid to drain completely through the drain bolt. Wash off the bolt with a wet rag to remove excess transmission fluid.

3
Open the hood by pulling the hood release lever under the steering panel. Lift the hood up all the way and support it with the tension bar. Locate the transmission dipstick above the transmission drain pan. Pull out the dipstick. Place a funnel in the tube and pour in 3.5 quarts of transmission fluid. Replace the dipstick and close the hood.

Run the car for five minutes. Wait 15 to 20 minutes for the engine to cool. Repeat Steps 1 through 3.
