If you have a wooden fence and still have problems keeping your dog in the yard, an electronic fence can help. Burying an underground fence along the base of the wooden fence can stop a dog from digging under the fence or jumping the fence to escape. After you have installed the fence, you can rest comfortably knowing that after your dog is trained, he won't be able to escape again.

- Moderate
Instructions
- Underground fence kit
- Power source
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- 1/8-inch drill bit
- Shovel

1
Find a location for the transmitter. If you have a fence that closes in the backyard from one side of the house to the other side of the house, you can place the transmitter inside the house or on an outside wall nearest the end of the fence on either side of the house.
-
2
Mount the transmitter on the wall with the screws in the hardware kit. Drill a 1/8-inch hole through the wall to the outside.
-
3
Use the shovel to dig two 3-inch-deep trenches. Dig one trench 6 inches from the fence. Dig another trench 42 inches from the fence. The fence setup that you will use is called a double loop. The reason you use this type of installation is that you want to have the underground fence only along the fence line and not along the house, so the dog can enter and exit the house without getting a shock.
-
4
Connect the first wire to the unplugged transmitter. Lay the wire in the first trench 6 inches from the fence. When you get to the end of the fence on the other side of the house, make a "U" trench to connect the first trench to the second trench. Continue laying the wire making the "U" to the second trench. Continue laying the wire in the second trench making your way back to the transmitter.
-
5
Thread the end of the wire through the wall with the first wire. Connect both wires to the transmitter. Plug the transmitter into the power source. Hold the collar in your hand while outside. Walk towards the boundary wire. You will hear a warning beep coming from the collar. This means that the underground fence is working.
-
6
Cover up the wire in the two trenches and tamp down the dirt with your foot. Place the warning flags along the fence line. You will use the flags for training purposes until the dog learns that he cannot go close to the fence.
