USB 2.0 offers dramatic increases in speed and device compatibility over USB 1.1.

Converting your desktop computer from USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 consists of a simple hardware component upgrade inside the case. In the instance of a laptop, upgrading is even easier, only requiring the addition of an adapter card plugged into your laptop's expansion slot. Upgrading to USB 2.0 leads to a significant increase in data transfer rate over USB 1.1 and gives you compatibility with many USB devices not available for USB 1.1.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Upgrading USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 on a Laptop

    • 1

Locate the PCMCIA or ExpressCard expansion slot on your laptop. This slot is usually on the side and clearly marked.

    • 2

Insert the USB 2.0 adapter card into your laptop's expansion slot per manufacturer's instructions. Make certain the card is secured.

    • 3

Install USB 2.0 adapter card software, if required, and follow on-screen instructions. The software is obtained from a CD included with the adapter or via download from the manufacturer's website. Your USB 2.0 slots should now be available for use.

Shut down your computer and unplug it. Use the screwdriver to unscrew any necessary screws in order to open the computer case. Some cases may not require tools to open the case.

    • 5

Discharge any static electricity by touching a metal surface. Examine the inside of your computer and determine if you have an available PCI slot. They are usually long, white and narrow (or yellow if it is PCI-Express). There are many notches lining either side of the slot with a shape that matches the connector on your new USB 2.0 adapter card.

    • 6

Gently push the USB PCI card into the slot until it is secure. Do not push too hard as the card is fragile and should slide easily into the slot. Make certain that the USB slots on the card fit through the metal cut-outs on the back plate of the computer so that you can access them from outside.

Close the case, plug your computer back in and turn it on. Install any software that came with the USB adapter card. Your USB 2.0 slots should now be available for use.
