How to Use Extra Nuts on the Johnny Bolts When Setting the Toilet
A toilet flange is the first piece of the toilet sewer line and is found attached to the bathroom floor under the toilet bowl. It has a flat lip on one end that rests flush on the floor and is attached to the floor with screws. Two vertical bolts (known as Johnny bolts) are attached to the flange's lip, one on each side, which slide through the two holes on the base of the toilet bowl when it is placed in position. Adding extra nuts to the bolts will help better secure the toilet bowl to the floor. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place a wax ring on top of the toilet flange, between the two vertical Johnny bolts. The hole in the center of the wax ring will be directly over the central hole in the toilet flange.
-
2
Lower the toilet carefully down onto the wax ring so that the Johnny bolts enter up through the holes on each side of the toilet bowl. Apply weight to the toilet bowl. This will help squash the wax ring and stop leakage between the ring and toilet bowl.

Place a washer over the end of each Johnny bolt, then thread one nut onto each bolt by hand. Tighten the nuts in place using an adjustable wrench. When the nuts are tight, thread a second nut (the same size as the first two nuts) onto the ends of the Johnny bolts. Tighten them by hand. Placing a wrench on one of the bottom nuts, use a second wrench to tighten the top nut in position. Repeat this process on the other Johnny bolt. Place the plastic top caps over the ends of the Johnny bolts.

Tips & Warnings
The installation of the second nuts may not allow for the top cap to rest evenly over the top of the bolt.
Do not overly tighten the first nuts on the Johnny bolts as this may crack or break the toilet bowl.
