How to Change a Fuel Pump on a Chevy Blazer
A bad fuel pump can be frustrating, as this problem prevents your Chevy Blazer from moving out of your driveway. The electric fuel pump works by carrying the flow of fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors or carburetor. If any part of the pump wears out or becomes damaged or corroded, replacement will be unavoidable. The task can be completed in under three hours. Save money and time by doing it yourself at home rather than having the vehicle towed to the shop.
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Jack
- 2 Jack stands
- Ratchet
- Socket
- Flathead screwdriver

1
Prop open the hood and find the fuel-pump relay housed in the fuse block inside the engine compartment for Blazers manufactured between 1995 and 1997 with 2.2L engines. Start the engine. Allow the engine to stall.
-
2
Locate the Schrader valve on the inlet fuel line, which is a part of the fuel rail. Look for a valve that resembles a common bicycle valve in front of the first fuel injector. Push down on the valve stem with a regular screwdriver. Disconnect the negative cable from your battery.

-
3
Use the jack to lift the back of the Blazer off the ground and place a jack stand in front of the jack on each side of the frame.
-
4
Remove the hose clamp on the filler hose with the ratchet and socket. Unbolt the fuel tank shield with the ratchet and socket. Lower the jack and pull it out from under the Blazer.
-
5
Use the jack to support the weight of the tank. Use the ratchet and socket to unbolt both straps that hold the tank in place.
-
6
Find the vapor hose and fuel hoses attached to the assembly sitting atop the tank. Push down the lock tabs on the connectors with the screwdriver and remove the hoses. Disconnect the electrical connector.
-
7
Lower the jack to pull the fuel tank down. Turn the tabs surrounding the lock ring to the left with the flathead screwdriver and hammer until the lock ring comes out of the assembly. Remove the fuel pump from the tank and set it aside.
-
8
Install the sending unit pump assembly into the tank, keeping the filter in a horizontal position. Replace all the O-rings on the assembly and twist the locking ring back on using the flathead screwdriver and hammer.
-
9
Jack the fuel tank up and attach the vapor and fuel hoses. Plug in the electrical connector. Return the straps and tank shield to their original positions, bolt them in and attach the filler hose to the fuel tank.
-
10
Put the jack back on the frame and use it to raise and then lower your Blazer after you remove the jack stands. Restore the pump relay to its original position, and connect the negative battery cable.
