How to Print a Photo on a Pillowcase

Printing photos on pillowcases transforms a boring pillowcase into one that immediately catches the eye. Photos are always welcome in any room of a home, particularly in special places. Photo pillowcases make ideal gifts because you can mail them inexpensively anywhere in the world. Photo pillowcases might help children with separation anxiety from parents or grandparents and you can make them to fit any size pillow.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Word processing (or graphics editing software)
  • Digital photo image
  • Iron-on transfer paper
  • Color printer (Ink full to capacity)
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • White or light colored pillowcase
  • Measure the area on the pillowcase where you want the photo. Write down the measurements.

  • Insert the photograph that you wish to place on the pillowcase into your word processing program.

  • Set up the document size to match the height and width that you want it to be on the pillowcase. Allow for one inch margins on all sides.

  • Load the transfer paper into the paper tray of the printer. You will need to refer to your printer's specific directions for which side of the transfer paper is the "right" side that needs to be facing up or down in the paper tray. Test the image on a regular sheet of paper before using the transfer paper if you're not sure.

  • Print the iron-on image onto the transfer paper. Place the pillowcase on the ironing board and set the iron to a medium heat without steam. Iron the photo image onto the pillowcase using slow, steady motions with the iron. After you have applied heat to the entire transfer, carefully remove the paper from the pillowcase.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may also consider ordering a custom pillowcase with your picture from an online or local print company.
  • Watch the size of your photograph. It's fine to resize an image to make it smaller, but making an image larger may disrupt the resolution and skew the appearance.
