How to Replace the Fuel Pump in a Jeep Cherokee

How to Replace the Fuel Pump in a Jeep Cherokee thumbnail
Much like the gas pump, the fuel pump pressurizes and moves fuel in the vehicle.

The electric fuel pump in the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee is inside of the fuel pump module. The module includes an inlet, a sending unit for the fuel gauge, a float and a check valve mounted in a frame. The check valve keeps fuel in the lines for quick starts. If the fuel pump or electric motor fails, you must replace the entire module as a unit, because the parts are not serviceable by themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of metric sockets and ratchet
  • Fuel pump module spanner wrench
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Wood blocks
  • Suitable container for gasoline
  • Fuel pressure gauge with bleed-off valve
  • Pump to drain fuel from tank
  • Pliers
  • Shop rags
  • Fuel line quick disconnect tools

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Jack up the rear of the vehicle. Remove the left rear wheel. The onboard refueling vapor recovery (ORVR) control valve is at the top of the tank, and it has at least one hose connected to it. Clean any dirt from the ORVR control valve. Push the tab in at the top of the ORVR locking ring, and rotate the ring counterclockwise. This releases the ORVR. Lift it slightly, and use a pump to drain the fuel through this opening.

    • 2

Remove the stone shield behind the left rear wheel by drilling out the plastic rivets and removing the three support bolts. Remove the three attaching bolts at the bottom of the two-piece fuel tank support bracket. Remove the hose clamp connecting the fuel fill pipe to the tank. Disconnect the fuel vent hose. Remove the ORVR hose elbow from the evaporation canister.

    • 3

Place a jack under the fuel tank. Remove the clips connecting the fuel tank to the rear bumper by using pliers. Remove the fuel tank heat shield bolts. Disconnect the fuel pressure and return lines at the fuel pressure module using quick disconnect tools. Disconnect the fuel tank vent near the front of the tank. Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector from the module. Remove the front and rear fuel tank mounting bolts. Carefully lower the fuel tank to the floor.

    • 4

Clean the area on the tank around the module. Place the fuel pump module spanner wrench over the retaining ring, and use it to turn the ring counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the module free from the fuel tank.

    • 5

Clean the threads on the fuel tank thoroughly by using soap and water. Place a new gasket on the module, and install it to the tank. Put clean water on the lock-nut threads, and place the lock-nut over the module. Point the indexing arrow on the top of the module toward the front of the vehicle by turning the module in the tank. Tighten the lock-nut snugly using the lock-nut spanner wrench. Reverse the removal procedure to complete installation.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your vehicle is operational when you plan to replace the fuel pump module, run the vehicle until it is as low on fuel as possible. This makes it easier to drain the tank and remove it.

  • Gasoline is extremely flammable. Use caution when draining fuel, and use a suitable container. Be careful when handling the hoses at the top of the ORVR and other fuel vents. Loose connections to these hoses can cause the check engine light to illuminate.
