Taking Slats Out of Your Faux Wooden Blinds

Save

Faux wooden blinds provide the same light and privacy control as custom blinds. They are also durable and more economical than their expensive counterparts. One of their drawbacks, however, is that faux wooden blinds come in a limited number of widths and lengths, which can be a problem for homeowners with odd-sized windows. The width can often be custom-cut at many home improvement stores, but adjusting the length is usually the homeowner's job. To avoid the sloppy look of excess slats piled in the window sill, shorten blinds with a few common tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Pop out the buttons on the underside of the bottom rail with a screwdriver. Most blinds have three buttons.

  • Push the lift cord through the button and cut off the knot with scissors. Wide blinds may have a small plastic pulley inside the button. If so, push it out with the screwdriver.

  • Place the buttons and pulleys to the side in a safe spot.

  • Pull the bottom rail and excess slats out from the side to remove them from the blinds' slat ladders until the desired length is reached.

  • Replace the bottom rail into the slat ladder beneath the remaining bottom slat.

  • Cut off the ladder hanging below the bottom rail with scissors.

  • Thread the lift cords back through the bottom rail and tie into a knot, or thread the looped lift cord of wider blinds through the bottom rail and around the plastic pulley.

  • Snap buttons in place over the knots or snap pulleys into the buttons of wider blinds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take care not to cut lift the cords when cutting slat ladders.
