How to Refill the Transmission Fluid on a 2005 Ford Taurus

The 2005 Ford Taurus is equipped with an automatic transmission, which requires specialized automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to run efficiently. The transmission fluid lubricates the gears to ensure that the transmission shifts smoothly and does not jam up. Refilling the automatic transmission fluid must be done with caution, as overfilling can result in transmission failure. While adding the fluid, you must stop every few seconds to recheck the transmission fluid level.

Instructions

1. Drive your Taurus for 20 miles to get it to normal operating temperature. Transmission fluid expands when it's warmed, so to ensure the correct level, you have to measure and add the fluid at operating temperature.

2. Park the Taurus on a level area. Engage the parking brake to ensure the vehicle does not shift or move. Press your foot on the brake pedal and move the shifter through each gear, waiting five seconds between each gear. This ensures time for each gear to be engaged. End with the shifter in "Park" while keeping the engine running.

3. Open the hood of the Taurus and locate the "ATF" dipstick and reservoir. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag. Place the dipstick back into the reservoir and push it in as far as it will go. Remove the dipstick and check the measurement level to see whether fluid must be added.

4. Place a funnel in the reservoir tube. Slowly pour transmission fluid into the funnel, adding a small amount at a time. Recheck the level of the fluid. Continue this process until the measurement reads "Full" on the dipstick. Reinsert the dipstick and close the hood of the Taurus.
