How Do I Remove an Old-Style Schlage Deadbolt?

Schlage Hardware has been producing residential deadbolts for over 75 years, so the chances of finding an older Schlage deadbolt in a home built 30 or 40 years ago is likely. The removal procedure for these older locks is actually quite a bit easier than the more modern home Schlage security locks that have become standard and can be completed in a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Hold the door open to access to both the key and latch sides of the deadbolt.

  • Turn the interior latch handle upright to expose the two flange screws on the interior side of the deadbolt. Some very old styles of Schlage deadbolts had three flange screws, with one centered at the top and two evenly spaced below.

  • Grip both sides of the deadbolt assembly over door edge and the slide bolt. Remove the interior flange screws to free the lock cylinder and latch flange from the door.

  • Continue to hold the exterior lock cylinder and remove the interior latch handle by pulling it horizontally away from the door.

  • Extract the lock from the exterior face of the door by allowing it to fall away while holding the cylinder.

  • Detach the slide bolt mechanism from the door edge mortise by removing the two small screws holding the face plate using a screwdriver. Push the slide bolt from within the lock cylinder hole to release and remove it.
