    • Electronic Tuner
    • Single-edged Razor Blades
    • Toothpicks
    • Three-squared Files
    • small, slotted screwdrivers
    1. Distinguishing Between Draw Reeds and Blow Reeds

      • 1

Remove the covers from the harmonica.

      • 2

Etch a mark by the reed you want to tune to avoid tuning the wrong one.

      • 3

Note that the draw reeds are above the reed plates, attached to the comb.

      • 4

Note that the blow reeds are under the reed plates.

      Tuning Draw Reeds

      • 1

Slide a single-edged razor blade under the reed.

      • 2

Use a jeweler's three-squared file to scratch some metal from the flat, free end of the reed, moving in a diagonal line from either side of the reed to raise the pitch.

      • 3

File just a little metal at a time, then check the pitch. Avoid shortening the reed too much.

      • 4

Continue until the pitch is correct.

      • 5

Etch or scratch metal off the arm of the reed near the rivet to lower the pitch.

      • 6

Use the tip of the file for etching.

      • 7

Use a dull, single-edged blade to support the reed while you are working on it.

      Tuning Blow Reeds

      • 1

Insert a small, flat screwdriver or a toothpick through the mouthpiece hole, pushing up the reed.

      • 2

Use the flat side of the screwdriver or toothpick as a work surface for filing and etching.

      • 3

Use your three-squared file to remove the metal.

      • 4

File the reed to raise the pitch.

      • 5

Etch the reed near the rivet to lower the pitch.

      • 6

Check the offset (depth) after tuning.

      • 7

Check the free swing of the reed.

      • 8

Check the pitch, using a piano or electronic tuner.

      • 9

        Repeat, if necessary.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Remove the metal shavings; they can interfere with the reed. Clean the reed using the tip and side of your file. Do not remove any metal while cleaning off the shavings.
