How to Remove Coffee Stains From Travel Mugs

Save

A travel mug is a convenient and cost-effective way make coffee just how you like it and take it with you when you leave the house. Unfortunately, it's all too easy to forget about your travel mug and leave it on your desk at work or under the seat of your car, where leftover coffee stains the mug. Once your travel mug is stained, soap and water isn't going to clean it.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking soda
  • Sponge
  • White vinegar
  • Make a paste of 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water. If your travel mug has some odor in addition to the visible stain, let the baking soda paste sit in the bottom of the mug for at least 30 minutes. If you can, leave the paste in the mug overnight.

  • Use a damp sponge to work the baking soda paste against the coffee stain.

  • Rinse the travel mug with clean water and check to see if the stain is completely gone.

  • If any stain remains, add a small amount of undiluted white vinegar--just enough to cover the bottom of the travel mug. Wipe the vinegar around the bottom of the mug.

  • Rinse the travel mug thoroughly and allow it to air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid coffee stains or odors in your travel mug by rinsing it out when you're finished. The longer coffee sits in the bottom of the mug, the more potent the stain becomes. As soon as you are able, wash your travel mug with hot soapy water.
  • To remember to bring your travel mug home each day, try leaving yourself a note. You can also put your keys and your travel mug next to each other on your desk as a visual reminder.
  • Be sure to keep all cleaning supplies out of the reach of children and pets, even non-toxic cleaning solutions such as baking soda and white vinegar.
