How to Improve FM Radio Antenna Reception

Receiving FM radio broadcasts requires an antenna of some sort. There are many different types of antennas, ranging from simple to elaborate, but getting the best performance out of your antenna is dependent upon employing some rather simple principles.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your antenna as high as possible and clear of any obstructions. The short wave lengths of FM signals makes them very susceptible to blockage. Try placing your antenna in different locations. This also helps with signal strength issues caused by blockage of the signal. Even moving an antenna a few feet in one direction or another can have a great effect on signal strength.

    • 2

Purchase a directional antenna. Connect it to your antenna terminals following the instructions. Directional antennas offer better performance than more common omni-directional antennas, with the trade-off that you may need to rotate the antenna when you listen to different stations.

    • 3

Purchase an antenna booster. Antenna boosters are signal amplifiers designed to up the power of a received signal and are available at electronics or radio supply stores. The antenna booster is connected into the signal line leading from the antenna to the receiver.
