How to Reset the 1997 Miata Radio

If you have forgotten the anti-theft code for your 1997 Miata's radio, you will need to reset the radio to restore it to working condition. A Mazda dealer can reset the radio for you, or you can save money and do it yourself. The procedure is applicable to the 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata, as well as to the 1996 model. The process is not applicable to non-factory radios.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your Miata on and view your radio. Make sure the radio display currently shows "Err" and not "Code." You can only reset the radio when it displays the "Err" message. If it displays "Code," type in a random code using the preset buttons three times. This will lock you out of the system and make the radio display "Err."

    • 2

Press the following buttons sequentially: "Scan," "AM/FM," "Prog/Auto M" and "Fast Forward." The radio should now display "-----."

    • 3

Enter "4989," using the radio preset buttons. Press and hold "Prog/Auto M," and then press and hold "Scan." Hold both buttons together. The display will change to "Good." Your Miata's radio is now reset and ready to use.
