1
Use a tape measure to measure the length of gutter you have to cover with mesh gutter guards. Each guard is approximately 3 feet long. Figure out how many guards it will take to fully cover your gutters. Make sure to have a few extra on hand in case one breaks or there was a miscalculation.

2
Lay the gutter guards on the ground right side up. Use a tape measure to measure 3 3/8 inches from either end of the mesh guard on the clip side. Cut out this section of the clip on both sides with tin snips.

Take a guard up to the roof. Slide the side opposite the clip under the shingles. Do not clip the guard in place yet. Bring up another guard. Put the second guard underneath the shingles and slide it under the first guard, overlapping the mesh until the cut edges of the clip touch, and the pattern in the mesh is aligned.

4
Halfway through the overlap of mesh, poke a hole all the way through both layers. Push a pin through the two layers to secure them together. The pins are usually sold separately from the mesh guards. You may also use stainless steel mechanic's wire.
-
5
Use a ratchet fastener to secure the pin in place. Repeat these steps until the entire length of your gutter is covered with the mesh guard.
-
6
Push the clips into place over the edge of your gutters when all the mesh guards are on.
