How to Run a Scandisk Defrag

Scandisk Defrag is a Windows utility which finds, corrects and defragments disc drives. Over time and new operating systems, the function has become "Error-Checking," which scans the drive for errors and "Defragmentation," which reorganizes the drive. You can purchase and download third-party software which does the same thing. Running both utilities regularly keeps your computer running at peak efficiency, maintains overall health, and increases your computer's speed.

Instructions

  1. Scandisk

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu. Choose "My Computer" in XP or older models. Select "Computer" in Vista and 7 operating systems.

    • 2

Right click on the hard drive and click "Properties." Choose the "Tools" tab. Click "Check Now" under "Error-Checking." Press "Continue" if prompted.

    • 3

Choose one or both "Check Disk" options. "Automatically fix file systems errors" repairs errors, but does not identify failing sectors. "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" looks for sectors in the specified drive that need repair. Close all files before you begin the scan by clicking "Start." If you get a "Disk check can't be performed" error, select "Yes" to have the check begin the next time you start the computer.

    • 6

Choose the "Tools" tab and click "Defragment Now" under Defragmentation. Set the Disk Defragmenter to run on a schedule, if you desire. Click "Defragment Now" or "Defragment"in XP and older operating systems.
