How to Reduce Laptop Temperature
As technology advances, laptop computers become faster and have greater capabilities than they did in previous years. The problem with quicker laptops and the compact design is that the internal components build up heat faster, which can run the risk of overheating. When the laptop overheats, the system can crash or cause irreversible damage to the computer. There are ways to reduce the temperature of your laptop computer to prevent overheating.

1
Choose the Start menu by clicking the computer mouse and select Control Panel. Go to Power Options and select Windows Power Management and click on Portable/Laptop.
-
2
Turn off the power on the laptop to clean the fan vents with a can of compressed air. Cleaning the fans will help the fans run better so they can cool the laptop. The vents are typically located on the bottom, back or sides, depending on the type of laptop model. Spray the air into the laptop's exhaust vent to force the dust out through the vent. A vacuum cleaner attachment will also work.

Lift your computer off your lap or desk when you are using it. You can purchase commercial pads that are designed to increase airflow and cool the bottom of the laptop. If you do not want to purchase a pad, use household items to prop up the laptop.

4
Place your laptop in a cool area when using it. If you do not have a room with air conditioning, avoid using your computer in direct sunlight.
-
5
Properly shut down your computer when you are not using it. Go to the Start menu and select Shut Down to safely turn it off.

Tips & Warnings
Avoiding setting your laptop on soft surfaces such as pillows, blankets or cushions when using the computer on your lap or the heat inside of it can build up.
While cleaning the fan vents with compressed air, make sure to position the compressed air can upright, or it may spray liquid which could damage the laptop.
Using compressed air may not always remove all the dust from the fan. The laptop may need to be disassembled to clean the fan. If the computer needs to be taken apart, consult a professional to avoid damage.
