Hide valuables in a handmade book safe

You don’t have to invest in a steel safe to keep your valuables secure at home. It’s easy to make secret safes out of common items, such as empty food cans or boxes. However, a hollowed out hardcover book is one of the most secure homemade safes that can be quickly crafted using minimal supplies because it so easily blends in with the rest of the books on your bookshelf, making your safe indistinguishable from any other book.

Instructions

  1. Method

    • 1

Open the book to a page in the first quarter of the book.On the right side of the opened book, use your ruler and pencil to draw a large rectangle around the entire page. Leave a ½- inch border around the edges.

    • 2

Line up your ruler with the left line of the rectangle. With a sharp penknife, begin cutting into the pages of the book. Cut 20 pages at a time, removing your cut-outs as you go. Repeat with the remaining lines. Continue cutting until there is one inch of uncut pages left at the back of the book.

    • 3

Measure the interior bottom, top, and sides of the cut-out portion of the book. Cut a piece of felt according to those measurements and glue each piece into place using a hot glue gun. Allow the glue on the felt pieces to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • When gluing the felt on the interior, be careful not to overlap onto the first cut out page or the book will not close properly.

  • Store the book on a low bookshelf with other books to avoid detection.

  • Be careful when using the penknife to avoid injury.

  • Take great care when using a hot glue gun to avoid burns.

  • Adult supervision is required for children attempting this craft.
