How to Replace the Door Latch on a Maytag Dishwasher

Save

Maytag has been producing dishwashers in the United States for over 50 years. Their line of dishwashers include a number of economical and efficiency features such as low water usage and fast drying cycles. Despite the model, one thing that all Maytag dishwashers have in common is that they won't operate if there's a problem with the door latch. This makes Maytag washers safe to operate, but causes problems if something goes wrong with the door latch. Replacing a faulty door latch on a Maytag dishwasher should be done as soon as you notice problems.

Things You'll Need

  • New latch
  • Torx screwdriver set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Turn off the power for the dishwasher. Either unplug it from the outlet or turn off the circuit that controls the dishwasher at the main switch.

  • Open the dishwasher door to the fully opened position.

  • Remove the inner door panel. This is held in place with Torx screws, so you need either a Torx screw set or adapter. Unscrew the screws and set them aside. Gently lift up the panel from the door. It is attached to two wiring harnesses that need to be disconnected before you can remove the panel from the door. Disconnect the door from the harnesses by pulling apart the wires at the plugs where they connect.

  • Remove the two screws holding the latch in place. Set them aside. Use needle-nose pliers to pull off the wires attached to the handle. Pull the wires by the metal plug on the end, not by the wire itself, to avoid damaging them.

  • Press the two tabs on either side to remove the door latch and housing. Insert the new latch and housing into the socket, and press in place until you hear the tabs click. Reattach the wires to the switch and secure with the two screws.

  • Place the inner door on top of the door assembly. Reattach the wiring harnesses by plugging them back in.

  • Secure the inner door with the Torx screws. Restore the power to the dishwasher by plugging it back in or switching the circuit back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a digital camera to take pictures as you work to help you remember how different dishwasher components are attached during reassembly.
  • Always use caution when working around electricity.
