How to Repair Crystal Stemware

Save

The repair of crystal stemware is a seemingly daunting task that many owners do not dare to undertake, but it is possible to do what the professional restorers do, given enough time and patience. The owner must understand that the repair will not likely be perfect but may allow the piece to be used. A chipped piece will be much easier to repair than a broken piece which may require professional attention.

Things You'll Need

  • Wet/dry sandpaper, very fine
  • Cylindrical pencil or pen
  • Transparent tape
  • Crystal Saver diamond file
  • Prepare a tool by purchasing sandpaper of about 600 grit or finer. This can found in automotive stores as well as furniture finishing departments.

  • Wet a small piece of sandpaper so that it is flexible enough to wrap smoothly around a cylindrical tool such as a pencil or pen. Fasten with a small amount of tape.

  • Use the tool to slowly file the chip in the crystal, taking great care not to use too much pressure. Focus on any rough or sharp places. Be patient, but don't overcorrect. The finished product is not likely to be perfect, but the goal is to make the stemware safe to use. If the repair is perfect, the value of the piece will not be affected.

  • Purchase a Crystal Saver diamond file from a website or dealer if the repair with sandpaper is not satisfactory. The Crystal Saver is a rounded file designed to smooth the edges of a chipped glass. It may or may not produce perfect results.

Tips & Warnings

  • Professional crystal restorers are available in many large cities and can be found on the internet. If the piece of crystal is valuable or if there are a number of damaged pieces, consulting with a professional may be the best way to assure success.
