Making a Flag Out of Beads & Safety Pins

Flags are used to represent different countries, states, towns and even organizations such as Boy Scouts of America. Create your own American flag lapel pin out of seed beads and safety pins of varying size to show your patriotism, especially for holidays such as the 4th of July or Memorial Day. Alter layout and color of the seed beads to create a flag pin that replicates almost any simple flag design.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 size 0 silver safety pins
  • 1 size 2 silver safety pin
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Pillow
  • Red, white and blue seed beads
  • Pry open the loop of the size 2 safety pin with a small flathead screwdriver like you pry open a keychain to allow keys to be added to it.

  • Slide the size 0 safety pins onto the open arm of the large safety pin, around the pried open loop and finally onto the arm of the safety pin that doesn't open. Do this through the loop of these smaller safety pins so that the arm of these safety pins that opens will face out when the larger safety pin is pinned to something.

  • Pin the loop of the size 2 safety pin back closed with pliers.

  • Pin the size 2 safety pin to a pillow so you can view your project as others will see it when worn on your lapel.

  • Open the safety pin farthest to the left. Thread five blue, a white, a red, another white and another red seed bead, in that order and close the safety pin. Repeat this same pattern on the next four safety pins.

  • Open the sixth safety pin. Thread nine seed beads, alternating red and white starting with red, and close the safety pin. Repeat this same pattern on the remaining safety pins.

  • Open the large safety pin, remove your completed flag pin from the pillow and attach it to your lapel, purse or backpack.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a different flag design with safety pins and beads, first sketch out your design using a 10-by-9 grid to determine the order of the beads for each safety pin and then use the appropriate color of beads to thread your design onto the safety pins.
