The fuel system on the 2000 Hyundai Elantra has an in-line canister fuel filter that is designed to prevent anything besides gas from entering the engine. The fuel filter strains the gas as it comes through the inner part of the filter, which is made up of fibers that catch and hold any types of sediments or impurities in the gas. Then, the clean gas flows out of the fuel filter and into the engine. Replace the fuel filter between 40,000 and 60,000 miles.
Things You'll Need
- Drip pan
- Metric open-end wrench set
- New fuel filter
Park the 2000 Hyundai Elantra outside or in a well-ventilated area. Pull the hood latch and raise the hood.
Remove the fuel cap from the fuel tank to release the gas pressure in the fuel filter. This will prevent gas from flowing everywhere when the fuel lines are removed from the fuel filter.
Locate the fuel filter underneath the brake fluid reservoir on the driver-side rear of the engine. You should be able to access the fuel lines without removing anything.
Position the drip pan under the Elantra in the general area below the fuel filter. The drip pan will catch the small amount of excess fuel that will drain out of the fuel lines and the fuel filter.
Remove the bottom fuel line with an open-end wrench by turning the hex head nut on the end of the fuel line counterclockwise. Then, unscrew the fuel line with your fingers. Pull the bottom fuel line away from the fuel filter.
Loosen the top fuel line with the open-end wrench by turning the hex head nut on the end of the fuel line counterclockwise. Then, unscrew the fuel line with your fingers and pull it away from the fuel filter.
Pull the fuel filter out of the mounting bracket and put it into the drip pan. Position the new fuel filter into the mounting bracket with the flow arrow on the filter pointing upward. Screw both of the top and bottom fuel lines on. Tighten the fuel lines tight with the open-end wrench.
Screw the fuel cap back onto the fuel tank. Turn the key on and off five different times and then crank the engine on the sixth turn. This method removes the air from the new fuel filter and primes the filter with gas. Check the fuel filter with the motor running. Turn the motor off and lower the hood.
Tips & Warnings
- The Hyundai Elantra model cars that were built after 2000 have the fuel filter installed on top of the gas tank.
- The flow arrow that is imprinted on the fuel filter represents the direction of the fuel flow from the fuel tank to the engine.
- Do not use any type of open flames around gas.
- Wear some type of safety glasses when changing a fuel filter.
