How to Install Magnetic Alarm Contacts on Doors

Save

A home alarm system is one of the biggest deterrents for any burglar or robber. Home security systems use door sensors to tell the system when an alarm has been tripped. Small magnetic sensors create a magnetic field when the door is closed. When the magnetic field is broken, a signal is sent to the security system control panel and the alarm goes off. You can install magnetic door sensors yourself without calling your alarm company.

Things You'll Need

  • All-purpose cleaner Paper towels Dry rag Door sensors/magnetic contacts Stud finder Drill Screws
  • Choose the door that you want to install the door sensor on. Use a paper towel and an all-purpose cleaner to clean the interior of the door. Wipe the interior of the door clean with a dry towel.

  • Use a stud finder to find a stud on the wall next to the door. Make sure that the stud is the closest one to the door. Hold the door sensor up to the stud and mark it on the wall with a pencil. Use a drill to drill a pilot hole in the wall.

  • Secure the door sensor to the wall with screws and your drill.

  • Choose the location on the doorjamb that you want the magnetic switch to go on. You need to pick a place that is parallel to the door sensor. The magnetic switch has to make contact with the door sensor to complete the circuit.

  • Use your pencil to mark the spot on the door. Drill holes in the door with your drill on the marks that you made. Secure the magnetic switches to the door with screws and your drill.
