How to Replace the Belt on the Bissell 8910 Carpet Cleaner

Your carpet cleaner belt may be broken if your Bissell 8910 Carpet Cleaner isn't working or if it begins to smoke. You can take the machine to a professional to be repaired, or you can attempt the repair on your own. Check your warranty to determine whether changing the belt on your own will void it. Always turn off the machine and unplug it to prevent electric shock.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement belt
  • Turn the machine off, unplug it and let it cool off completely.

  • Step on the release bar and lower the top half of the machine to the floor. The release bar is located on the back of the machine between the two wheels.

  • Remove the tank by lifting the tank handle vertically to unlock it from the machine and pulling up. Set the tank aside.

  • Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the slot closest to the handle, and carefully pry the belt access door open.

  • Unscrew the screws that hold the red retainer plate in place. The red retainer plate holds the brush arm in place. Set the retainer plate and screws aside. Pull out the brush arm and set it aside.

  • Pull the toothed belt from the pulley.

  • Replace the old belt with a new toothed belt by putting one end around the pulley and the other around the brush.

  • Put the brush back into place. Replace the red retainer plate and screws. Snap the belt access door closed.
