Ipe wood is a durable, decay-resistant wood often used in outdoor building. Ipe wood decks still need to be regularly maintained and restored to ensure they last, despite the wood's natural durability. By cleaning and sealing your Ipe wood deck you can restore the original beauty of the wood and ensure that its finish lasts.
Things You'll Need
- Paint roller
- Deck cleaner
- Deck sealer
- 80 grit sandpaper
- Paint brush
- Garden hose
Clear the Ipe deck of any furniture, plants and clutter. Sweep the deck clean of dirt with a broom.
Repair splintered areas of the Ipe deck by sanding them smooth with 80-grit sandpaper. Fix any loose nails with a hammer.
Apply a smooth, even coat of deck cleaner to the entire surface of the Ipe deck with a paint roller. Allow the cleaner to absorb into the wood for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer before washing the deck clean with a garden hose. Allow the Ipe deck at least two days of drying time.
Apply a thin coat of deck sealer to the entire surface of the Ipe deck with a paint roller. Work the sealer into the wood with the paint roller until the sealer has been absorbed into the wood. Apply a second light coat of sealer to the deck and work it into the wood.
Brush thin coats of the sealer onto the hard-to-reach areas of the deck with a clean paint brush. Allow the sealer to completely dry for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.
Tips & Warnings
- Protect any plants in the area with plastic wrap.
- Restore your Ipe deck when the weather forecast calls for dry weather between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Wear hand and eye protection to protect yourself from chemicals.
