1
Lay a drop cloth, tarpaulin or several layers of newspaper on the ground. Place the barbecue grates or grills on top of the covering.
-
2
Wash away any dirt or food remnants on the surface of the grill with your hose. Do this on the outside as well. If there are some more stubborn spots, use the rough surface of a sponge with a small amount of dishwashing detergent and rub gently. Allow the grill to dry.

3
Read the directions on the can or jar of oven cleaner thoroughly. Wear rubber gloves and apply the oven cleaner on the grill. Apply a thin layer evenly on the surface of the grills. Turn the grill over and repeat this on the other side.
-
4
Move the grills to an area not frequented by children or pets. Allow the oven cleaner to set on the grills overnight. This will guarantee that all the dirt you cannot see will be absorbed by the oven cleaner.
-
5
Rinse the grills the day after using the oven cleaner. Use the hose and rinse thoroughly. Lift the cloth, tarpaulin or newspapers and roll it into a ball with any of the oven cleaner on the inside. Dispose in a tightly sealed garbage can.
-
6
Scrub any remaining spots gently with the fine steel wool and dishwashing detergent and hot water. Allow to dry for 2 hours. The grills should be completely clean.
-
7
Put the grill back on the barbecue. Turn on the barbecue to at least 400 degrees Fahrenheit to burn off any residue that might be left from the cleaning process. Turn off the heat and before it has cooled down completely, spray the grill with the non-stick oil. The grill is ready to use.
