How to Shorten Horizontal Blinds

Horizontal window blinds provide effective privacy covering over a window, as well as an attractive base beneath shears, panels or draperies. You can resize window blinds that extend past the bottom windowsill with a simple shortening process. Measure how long you need the blinds and shorten them to fit the dimensions of your windows. Once you shorten them adequately, your blinds will cover your window attractively.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Turn the bottom rail of the blinds over so you can see the two plugs located on the bottom edge. Pull these plugs straight out to remove them. Set the plugs aside somewhere safe where you will not misplace them.

  • Find the knots in the lift cords on the left and right side edges of the blinds and untie these knots. After you untie these knots, the lift cord will be loose through the horizontal slats. Support the bottom rail in place to prevent the blind slats from falling off the untied lift cords.

  • Pull off the bottom rail and set this aside. Next, still supporting the bottom-most slat, pull off the horizontal slats you need to remove in order to make the blinds short enough to fit your window. Pull the slats straight down to remove them from the lift cord that runs through them at the same time supporting the slats to allow you to only remove the slats you desire.

  • Extend the blinds all the way down over the window with the slats still present on the blinds to find the proper length you need for the blinds. Remove the slats necessary to cover the window down to just above the windowsill.

  • Replace the bottom rail beneath the bottom slat and tie the lift cords on both the right and left sides back into knots immediately beneath the bottom rail.

  • Stand back and look at the blinds to make sure they are level at the bottom. If one side is higher than the other is, untie the knots and adjust them so the bottom rail looks even.

  • Reinsert the bottom rail plugs back into the holes on the bottom edge of the bottom rail by pushing them in.
