How to Change a Heater Core in a 1995 Oldsmobile
If the heating system in your 1995 Oldsmobile is not working, the problem could be the heater core, through which the engine coolant passes like a miniature radiator. Changing the core can be a very difficult task. The replacement part can be hard to come by and the core, as in many vehicles, is contained behind the dashboard, which you'll need to remove. It's a good idea to consult a mechanic prior to taking on this task.
Things You'll Need
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Wheel chocks
- Large container
- Screwdriver
- Trim stick
Instructions
-
Removal
-
1
Raise the car and support it on jack stands, applying the parking brake to keep the car from rolling. Blocking the front wheels with chocks will also help.
-
2
Unscrew the petcock on the lower left end of the radiator and drain the engine coolant into a large container.
-
-
3
Disconnect the drain hose at the bottom of the heater case. Disconnect the heater hoses from the firewall in the engine compartment, loosening the hose clamps with a screwdriver.
-
4
Unscrew and remove the right-side sound insulator and the trim cover for the steering column.
-
5
Pry off all lower trim panels using a trim stick. Pry off the heater outlet duct and disconnect the glove box, opening the box and pushing in the spring-loaded pins on both sides to detach it.
-
6
Remove the cover for the heater core, pulling it straight back so you don't break the drain tube.
-
7
Remove the clamps for the heater core and pull the core out of its housing.
Installation
-
8
Install the replacement heater core in the housing and secure it with the clamps. Reconnect the cover.
-
9
Reconnect the glove box, heater outlet duct, all trim panels, the sound insulator and the steering column's trim cover.
-
10
Reconnect the heater hoses at the firewall with their clamps and connect the drain hose to the bottom of the heater case under the car.
-
11
Lower the car off of the jack stands.
-
12
Fill the radiator with the engine coolant with the help of a funnel at the radiator filler neck in the engine compartment. If the old coolant is contaminated, replace it with a fresh mix of half antifreeze and half water.
