How to Make Chalkboard Paint at Home
If you are in search of an alternative solution to traditional store-bought chalkboards, make your own chalkboard at home. The process of making your own chalkboard is simple. There is a recipe for special paint that will allow you to turn walls, doors, tables and most other hard surfaces into a chalkboard. Things You'll Need
- 3 tsp. acrylic paint
- 1 1/2 tsp. water-based glazing medium
- 1/2 tsp. powder tile grout
- Small mixing bowl
- Wooden stir stick
- Paintbrush
- 400 grit or higher sandpaper
- Chalk
- Felt cloth
- Damp lint-free rag

Combine 3 tsp. acrylic paint, 1 1/2 tsp. water-based glazing medium, and 1/2 tsp. powder tile grout in a small mixing bowl.

Blend the ingredients thoroughly with a wooden stir stick.

Use long strokes to apply the paint mixture with a regular paintbrush.

Wait for the painted area to dry completely.

Sand the painted area lightly with 400 grit or higher quality sandpaper.

Rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire painted area.

Wipe the chalk away with a felt cloth.

Clean the remaining chalk residue with a damp lint-free rag.

Tips & Warnings
This recipe will only make a small amount of chalkboard paint. If you need to make a larger quantity of paint, substitute the recipe with 1 part glazing medium, and 2 parts acrylic paint. The quantity of chalkboard paint made with this recipe will depend upon the quantity of the two ingredients used for the recipe.
The paint made from this recipe does not have a long shelf life and will become extremely brittle after a few hours.
