How to Organize a Tool Chest

If you have ever done home improvement projects, then you've probably accumulated tools and other items that you needed along the way. Don't just let those tools sit in a heap in your garage. You can organize a tool chest so that you know what you have and can find what you need. That will help to make your next home improvement project even easier.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy-duty magnet sheet or non-slip rubber mat (optional)
  • Assortment of clear glass jars with lids
  • Sort your tools by type. For example, make a pile of all the screwdrivers, another pile for wrenches and another for nails. Continue until all of your tools are sorted.

  • Discard tools that you no longer want, need or use.

  • Line your tool chest drawers with either a heavy-duty magnet sheet or non-slip rubber matting. This step is optional, whether or not the tool chest already has lining. Choose a magnet sheet for drawers that will hold tools that might roll, such as screwdrivers, when the drawer is opened and closed. Choose rubber matting for drawers with tools that are flat and will not roll, such as wrenches.

  • Arrange tools in drawers that are appropriately sized for what will be stored in them. Bulkier tools such as hammers and flashlights need to be stored in deeper drawers than screwdrivers and wrenches require.

  • Sort small items such as nails, screws and wall anchors into clear glass jars with lids. The jars should be stored in a drawer deep enough to accommodate them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not overstuff your tool chest drawers because that could pose a danger. Tools can be sharp, and you could hurt yourself digging for something in an overstuffed drawer.
