Stainless steel tiles provide a durable surface in a kitchen, bathroom or work area. The tiles install on any flat surface on top of a subsurface like particle board or plywood. The tiles require special handling during installation. There are several methods to cutting the tiles but one is most effective. A special cutting blade must be used to cut them to the proper size.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Wet saw
- Diamond bit blade
- Metal sand paper
- Grinding disc
Measure the installation area using a tape measure. If you are cutting the tile to fit along the edge of a wall at the end of a row of tiles, measure from the edge of the last tile installed in the row to the wall taking into account the gap space used between each tile.
Measure out the length on the tile using the tape measure and mark the length with a pencil at both ends. Mark the tile on the protective coating, this should remain on the tiles all through the installation.
Put the stainless steel tile into a miter wet saw with a diamond bit blade. Line up the cut line on the saw with the marks you made on the tile. Measure the tile again to double check the distance. Turn the saw on and cut the tile at your marks.
Remove the tile from the saw and check the cut edge for burring or damage. If there are large burrs, remove them by sanding the edge with metal sand paper or by touching up the edge with a grinder and metal grinding disc.
Tips & Warnings
- An angle grinder with a cutting bit, a bandsaw with a metal butting blade or even a rotary tool with a metal cutting bit also cut stainless steel tiles.
- Use caution when operating a wet saw or any other power tool.
