How to Make a Plastic Braided Clothes Hanger
Recycle your plastic grocery bags into a padded clothes hanger that will help keep delicate clothing looking its best. This is a good project for older children and teenagers, combining crafting with recycling. Simple braiding techniques are required and a summer afternoon craft session making these useful hangers could provide a fun and informal backyard party session for youngsters. The padded hangers would make thoughtful and practical holiday and birthday gifts for teachers and grandparents.
Things You'll Need
- 1 plastic clothes hanger
- 2 white plastic grocery bags
- 2 colored plastic grocery bags
- Scissors
Instructions

-
1
Cut the grocery bags into 2-inch wide strip loops, discarding the bag bottoms and handles.
-
2
Join two loops by inserting one loop into the top of another loop, pulling it through again and making a knot. Make a strand of five white loops and a strand of five colored loops. More loops will be added during the braiding process.
-
-
3
Lay the strands on a table, forming a plus-sign shape. Pinch the strands together at the middle cross.
-
4
Sit on a chair and hold the hanger between your knees for stability, with the hanger hook facing away from you.
-
5
Place the strands at the beginning of the hanger hook by placing the crossed strands at the tip. Two colored and two white strands are positioned on each side of the hook, white on the left and colored on the right.
-
6
Begin braiding the strands by moving the top white strand under the hanger and between the two colored strands. Move the same white strand over the top of the hanger to the bottom right. Bring the strand over the hanger and to the bottom left.
-
7
Repeat the braiding pattern around the entire hanger. Knot and cut the excess strands to end.
