Replacing the faucet cartridge on your Delta faucet requires removing the bathtub faucet handle. Delta uses many different styles of faucet handles, but they secure to the faucet in only two ways. Whether you have a lever type handle or a knob, there is a screw securing the faucet to the cartridge assembly. Once you locate the screw the handle will pull off, and you can replace the cartridge.

Step 1

Place a wash cloth or towel over the bathtub drain. The handle securing screw is small and can accidentally drop down the drain.

Step 2

Feel or look under the curve of the handle for a small rubber plug, if you have a lever type handle. The plug is slightly raised and will pull out with your fingers or a pair of needle nose pliers. Remove the screw with an Allen wrench or Phillips-head screwdriver, depending upon the type of screw head.

Step 3

Look for the seam between the top and body of the handle, if you did not see a plug. Delta uses a cover on knob type faucets as well as some lever type faucet handles. The seam is either on the edges of the top of the handle or slightly toward the center of the top.

Step 4

Insert a small flat-head screwdriver between the seam, and gently pry the cover away from the handle. The securing screw is under the cover in the center of the handle.

Step 5

Turn the securing screw counterclockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the handle straight off the cartridge.
