How to Repair a Maytag Agitator

When a Maytag washing machine's agitator lifts up as water fills the tub, you know the mounting clip is broken or damaged, causing a malfunction. You can repair the Maytag agitator yourself by replacing the clip. The whole job seems extensive and involves a lot of dismantling, but it takes less than an hour and saves the expense of calling a professional.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Nut driver
  • Spanner wrench
  • 5 lb sledge hammer
  • Unplug the electrical cord of the Maytag washer from the electrical outlet before attempting to repair the agitator.

  • Locate the screws on the bottom of the front panel and unfasten them with a screwdriver, setting the screws out of the way.

  • Lift the front panel of the washer up from the bottom and detach the top from the metal clips, setting the panel off to the side.

  • Locate the bolts under the top lid in the front of the washer and use a nut driver to remove the bolts, putting them in a safe place.

  • Flip the top lid back so it is resting on the wall and locate the set screw on the side of the washer agitator, near the bottom.

  • Unfasten the set screw with a screwdriver and lift the agitator out of the washer tub, setting it out of the way.

  • Detach the spanner nut on the bottom of the tub with a spanner wrench and lift the tub out of the washer cabinet.

  • Remove the mounting stem. Use a sledge hammer to disconnect it from the transmission shaft by tapping gently on the stem until it comes loose.

  • Slide the mounting clip off the transmission shaft by hand and replace it with a new mounting clip, placing the clip over the shaft.

  • Reattach the mounting stem, using a sledge hammer to lock it in place on the transmission shaft and place the wash tub back onto the shaft.

  • Put the agitator back over the transmission shaft, securing it with the set screw. Flip the top lid of the washer down over the cabinet, attaching the bolts with a nut driver.

  • Attach the front panel to the washer cabinet, placing the top over the metal clips and securing the bottom with screws.

  • Plug the electrical cord of the Maytag washer into the electrical outlet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always unplug the electrical cord of the Maytag washer from the power supply before attempting to repair the agitator.
