How to Move a Washer & Dryer Upstairs
Moving washers and dryers around the home can be difficult because of their sheer bulk and weight. It's particularly important to make sure large appliances are handled safely when you're moving them up stairs because of the risk of personal injury or damage. It's easier, and also absolutely necessary, to have the help of friends and the right equipment if you need to move a washer or dryer upstairs. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn off the water supply to the washing machine and disconnect the electricity and drainage pipes from the back. Disconnect the air intake and outlet for the dryer and any water drainage pipes that are present. From here on the process is the same for both the washer and the dryer.
-
2
Stow any loose electrical cables or lengths of piping. Either tuck them securely inside a cavity at the back of the machine or tape them down.

-
3
Move the appliance dolly into position next to the machine. Have two friends lift the edge of the machine while you slide the dolly underneath. Securely strap the machine to the dolly according to the user instructions.
-
4
Move the machine to the foot of the stairs and stand above it on the stairs. Have your friends stand on either side of you and also grip the dolly. Never push an appliance up stairs or have anyone positioned below it on stairs.
-
5
Line up the dolly with the stairs, with the wheels touching the edge of the bottom step. Slowly pull the machine onto the first step, allowing the wheels to guide the movement.
-
6
Pull the machine up one step at a time. Don't rush. You and your helpers should communicate each time you move and stop so everyone knows exactly what is happening.
