Don't spend all that money on store-bought bows when it is easy to create your own homemade bows out of ribbon. Knowing how to make attractive bows is a good skill to have especially if you like to bring lots of gifts for birthdays and holidays, or if you need to decorate for weddings and special occasions.
Things You'll Need
- String or thin ribbon
Measure out 3 yards of ribbon. You can use any width ribbon depending on the size of bow desired. Pinch the ribbon with your left hand at the 9-inch point of your ribbon. Pinch the ribbon again with your right hand about 9 inches from that first spot. Bring the two pinched spots together to form a loop. Hold the loop together with your left hand and with your right hand, twist the ribbon at the pinched point one-half twist. You should have two loops that form a figure 8.
Gather another 9-inch section of ribbon and pinch together at the first spot. Hold and twist, then repeat by making loops and holding and twisting the remaining ribbon, leaving about a 9-inch tail.
Tie the ribbon around the middle of the bow loops, using a 20-inch length of thin ribbon in a matching color. Then knot to secure. Wrap ribbon around again and pull and knot to tighten securely. If you have an additional 20-inch section of the wider ribbon, wrap it around the middle and knot to hide the thin ribbon.
Grasp your bow by the tails and then open all the loops to make a pretty bow.
Tie or tape the ribbon to your wrapped package.
Tips & Warnings
- Wired ribbon is the easiest ribbon to work with.
- You can make bows of any size by using thicker or thinner ribbon and by adding more loops to the bow.
