How to Make a Storyboard in Photoshop

A storyboard is used by people making videos for the web, television or movies to help them plan out what the video will look like. It is made of a sequence of comic strip type panels, based on the script, that depict major scenes or plot points visually. While some people will simply sketch out the images by hand on paper, it can be more effective to use the tools and functions of Photoshop to create your storyboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. Select “File” from the menu and choose “New.” In the dialog that appears, choose the pixel width and height that you want for the overall page. This size will depend on how many panels you want to fit onto one page and how large you want them to be. Name the document “Storyboard 1.” Click “OK.”

    • 2

Click on the “New Layer” button below the “Layers” palette. Select the “Rectangular Shape” tool from the tools. Use it to draw a rectangular path where you want the first panel.

    • 3

Go to the “Paths” tab and right-click on the path. Chose “Stroke Path.” This produces a square box.

    • 4

Right-click on the layer and choose “Duplicate” layer. Repeat this until you have enough box layers for the panels you want on the page.

    • 5

Select the background layer and click on the "New Layer" button again. Select the "Pencil" tool from the tools and sketch in the action in the first panel. For example, the first panel might show your main character entering a room. The next could show him in conversation with another character in the room. The rest of the panels on "Storyboard 1" could be about the room scene.

    • 6

Select the “Brush” tool from the tools. Use it to paint each object in your panels that you want for the scene.

    • 7

Select the “Custom Shape” tool from the tools. In the options at the top, click on the “Presets” and choose one of the “Speech” bubbles. Draw this into the panels where you want to have dialog that a character is speaking.

    • 8

Select the “Type” tool from the tools. Type in the dialog inside the speech bubbles. Save your work.
