Horizontal venetian blinds that operate with slats and a string ladder system are one of the most common window treatments. These are available in a variety of styles and colors to coordinate with your home decor. After continued use, however, the parts may begin to wear out and fray, and you may have to repair the pull cord. This is possible to do yourself with a few basic tools.
Things You'll Need
- Flathead screwdriver
- New blind lift cord
- Hot glue
- Hot glue gun
- 3-inch electrical tape
Open up the mounting brackets by pushing up on them. If it is difficult to open the bracket, then use a flathead screwdriver to pop open the brackets. Pull down on the lift cord until the blinds are completely folded up. Lift the blinds out of the brackets, and place on a flat work surface.
Snip the cord with scissors at the fray, and pull the discarded piece out through the opening in the bottom bar.
Attach the new cord to the old by hot gluing the ends together and rolling them up in a 3-inch piece of electrical tape.
Hang the blinds back on the wall, and feed the new cord through the pathway. Gently pull on the old lift cord with one hand and guide the spliced cord piece through the slats and into the head box hardware with the other hand. After the splice is through the headbox, pull the new lift cord down so it is even with the bottom bar.
Remove the splice and slide on any plastic pull plugs. Tie a not in the end of the cord to secure the plugs.Pull on the lift cord, and check that the blinds work properly.
