How to Remove a 1999 Dodge Ram Steering Wheel

The steering wheel on the 1999 Dodge Ram has a plastic cover over the frame of the steering wheel that will need to be removed in order to gain acess to the securing bolts that mount the steering wheel to the steering column. The wire that is connected to the air bag will need to be cut off because the end of the wire is welded to the output. This will take you about 20 minutes.

      Disconnect the negative (--) terminal from the battery and set it aside Repeat with the positive (+) terminal. Remove the screws on the underside of the plastic cover on the steering wheel using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the plastic cover off the steering wheel.

      Look under the steering wheel and locate the thick black wire welded to the air bag. Cut the wire as close as you can to the end that is welded to the metal plate using the wire cutters.

      Remove the two screws on the top and bottom on the round connecting point on the steering column. Pull the steering wheel off the steering column.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not disconnect the battery, you will risk serious injury from the air bag deploying. Do not complete any circuit while working on the steering wheel, or the air bar may deploy.
